Ceiling ventilation purchasing guide

Ceiling ventilation purchasing guide

Our silent ceiling fans are a sustainable and healthy option to acclimate rooms. If you're thinking about which ceiling fan to buy, this guide will help you discover which one best suits your needs. This is everything you need to take into account:

How do I choose the right ceiling fan size?

The measurements of the right ceiling fan for each room depend on the size of the room. You need to calculate the room's square metres and then choose the size of the ceiling fan. The bigger the room, the bigger the diameter of your ceiling fan. We have different sizes so you can choose the one that best suits your space. You can find these span on the data sheets of our ceiling fans.

What is the best type of ceiling fan for my home?

If you need a fan for a common space, like a kitchen or living room, we recommend that you choose a model with a greater rotation speed and airflow. However, if you are looking for a fan for a smaller room, office or bedroom, you’ll need one that comes equipped with low or very low speeds, so that the airflow is not too high. If you need an outdoor ceiling fan (balcony, terrace, porch), we recommend our Windcalm Patio fan. It's specifically designed for outdoor areas thanks to its IP44 protection rating.

What do you have to take into account when buying a ceiling fan?

There are several factors you have to take into account to make a satisfactory choice. Firstly, whether it's a silent ceiling fan, as well as the size of the room, the height of the ceiling and the type of room you're going to place it in. On the other hand, consider whether you prefer it to be a ceiling fan with a light or a ceiling fan with no light, as well as if you want it to be a ceiling fan with Wi-Fi. You also have to consider whether you're looking for a fan with a summer/winter function, in addition to the power and type of motor, the material of the blades and motor, the consumption it generates and the energy efficiency it provides.

Which one's better, a fan with metal blades or one with plastic blades?

Plastic blades are more resistant and have easier maintenance. At Create, we design our ceiling fans using lightweight, highly resistant material to ensure that our models really are silent. For the blades, we use materials like solid wood or ultra-lightweight plastic.

What’s better, a blade fan or a tower fan?

If you’re looking for more airflow and want to be able to direct it in several directions, choosing a fan with blades is the ideal option. It also consumes less energy than a tower fan.

How do you replace a ceiling fan's light bulb?

You just have to remove its LED board, replace it with a new one and connect it.

How do you change the rotation direction of a ceiling fan?

Change the direction of the airflow by pressing the reverse function button on the remote control, mobile phone or wall controller while the fan is on. It doesn't work when the fan is switched off. The blades will stop turning and start up again in the opposite direction by simply pressing the button once.

How do you know if a fan is in summer or winter mode?

It's easy if you look at the direction of the fan blades. If you look at it from the ground, in summer mode the blades turn counterclockwise, while in winter mode the blades turn clockwise.

How do you use a ceiling fan in the winter?

If you choose one of the fans with a summer/winter function, you’ll improve energy efficiency as well ensuring that the room remains warm for longer thanks to the direction its blades move in. When in winter mode, it evenly distributes heat from the heating accumulated near the ceiling.

What’s the recommended height when installing a ceiling fan?

The minimum safety distance between the blades of a ceiling fan and the floor is 2.3m, although ideally you should place it at 2.4m. Therefore, the minimum ceiling height must be over 2.6m. The maximum distance between the fan and the floor so that it remains efficient is around 2.7m.

Can I install a ceiling fan on a low ceiling?

If the height of your ceiling is lower than 2.6 m, you can install the fan without double height and, therefore, any model will be valid. However, if the ceiling in your room is very high, we recommend a double-height fan, in other words, one with an extension bar so that you can extend the fan's hanging length.

Where is a ceiling fan installed?

It’s hung from the ceiling wherever there is a point of light. When installing it, you’ll have to ensure that it’s securely attached to the ceiling. All fixing screws should be checked and retightened whenever necessary before starting the fan.

How is a ceiling fan cleaned?

We recommend that you thoroughly clean your ceiling fan every 1 to 2 months. To this end, you’ll need to place a bed sheet or plastic cover underneath, a cloth, neutral liquid cleaner or soap and a chair or ladder. It’s important that you shut down and turn off the ceiling fan before you start to clean it, and if it's equipped with a light, the bulb must be cold for it to be removed. Then, clean the bulb and covers with a cloth impregnated with neutral liquid cleaner or soap and allow them to dry. Afterwards, use a dry cloth to clean the upper and lower side of each blade. Finally, screw the clean bulbs back into your fan.

Do ceiling fans make a lot of noise?

All our ceiling fans are very silent, as they have a DC motor that enables them to turn at different speeds without hardly making a sound.

Can ceiling fans be used on sloped ceilings?

It depends on the model. When installing a fan on a sloped ceiling, you have to ensure that the blades don’t hit the ceiling. If this is the case, you’ll have to choose a smaller fan or one with double height, in other words, one with an extension bar so that you can extend the fan's hanging length.

Do ceiling fans consume a lot of energy?

Ceiling fans are the most efficient, ecological option for reducing temperature in a room. Our fans consume a low amount of energy and do not use gases or fuels to cool spaces, unlike conventional air conditioning units. Our models use LED light panels, meaning they consume less energy than ceiling fans with conventional lighting. Furthermore, installing a fan with or without light is much less expensive than other climate control systems.

Can ceiling fans help reduce energy costs?

A ceiling fan saves 96% on your electricity bill when compared to air conditioning. What's more, fans with a summer/winter function improve the efficiency of both air conditioners and heaters, reducing their use time considerably.

How do you control the speed of the ceiling fan?

You can set the speed you want at any time using the remote control or, if your fan has Wi-Fi, you can do it with your mobile phone too. On some models you can also do it with their wall controller.

How many blades should a ceiling fan have?

Our models have between 2 and 5 blades. The 3-blade fan is the standard and is known for its balanced operation speed and the amount of air it circulates.

What cools more, a ceiling or standing fan?

A ceiling fan with the right characteristics is capable of reducing the thermal sensation of a room by up to 6°C. Furthermore, it usually has better coverage than standing ones and ensures that air is constantly circulating.

What type of blade gives off more air?

Generally, longer blades tend to move more air. If the room where you’re going to place it is a large one, more than 35m² in size, we suggest you choose one of our XL fans, such as Wind Large or Wind Sail, to ensure that the blades will cover the space you need.

How powerful should a ceiling fan be?

There's two types of motors used in ceiling fans: DC and AC motors. The direct current motor (DC) works in a different way to alternating current motors (AC). DC motors are much more efficient, silent, resistant and long-lasting than models that use other fan types of motor. They offer high power with less consumption and can turn the fan blades at a very high speed or very low speed, without making almost any noise. Furthermore, it connects seamlessly to the AC current in our homes thanks to a built-in transformer. AC motors are also silent, but not quite as efficient.

How should you use a ceiling fan in the summer?

If you choose one of the fans with a summer/winter function, you’ll improve your home's energy efficiency as well as ensuring that the room is better acclimatised thanks to the direction its blades move in. When in summer mode it moves fresh air from the floor upwards, dissipating heat and cooling the room.

How much does a ceiling fan lower the temperature?

A ceiling fan with the right characteristics is capable of cooling the room environment by up to 6°C.

How long does a ceiling fan last?

A ceiling fan can last more than 10 years if it's in a dry and clean environment. To make it last as long as possible, it's important to clean the blades and motor every 1 or 2 months.

What happens if you leave a fan on all night?

While it’s true that ceiling fans are healthier than air conditioning, as they prevent dryness in the environment, reduce the possibility of colds and avoid irritating the skin, mucous membranes, throat and eyes, it's better if it’s not on all night. In addition, if it's not on all night, it will use significantly less energy. Many of our fans are programmable for up to 4 hours thanks to their timer, and they turn off automatically once the selected time has passed.

How should the ceiling fan blades be placed?

The closer they're placed to the floor, the more cold air they’ll distribute. To achieve this shorter distance you can choose a fan with a selectable double height. When it comes to blade movement, unless the fan has a summer/winter function, they always turn anticlockwise, that is, the opposite of clockwise rotation.

How should a ceiling fan turn in the summer?

Ideally, it should move fresh air from the floor upwards, dissipating heat and cooling the room. In other words, turning anticlockwise. This is achieved thanks to fans with a summer/winter function.

Is it safe to use a ceiling fan outdoors?

If you need a fan for an outdoor area (balcony, terrace, porch), we recommend our Windcalm Patio fan. It's specifically designed for outdoor areas thanks to its IP44 protection rating, which means that it's protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes.
